Vilanova I la Geltru

Vilanova I la Geltru is a city inside the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and the capital of the Garraf comarca. Historically a fishing port, the town has a growing population of approximately 66,000, and is situated 40 km south-west of Barcelona, with the more famous coastal hotel of Sitges a few 10 km to the north-east. The town has a long records, and experienced an efflorescence at some point of the Romantic period evidenced by means of a wealth of opulent 19th century buildings.

The atmospheric town square, the Placa de la Vila, and a lot of its iconic public homes had been basically financed by means of Josep Tomas Ventosa Soler 1797-1874 a fabric multi-millionaire who made his fortune in Cuba. A monument featuring a bronze statue of Ventosa stands inside the middle of the rectangular. An same monument stands in Matanzas, Cuba, in which both statues have been solid.

Today, kids play across the monument and agile climbers from castellers to protestors to carnival pranksters climb the statue and beautify it with their own symbols Statue of town benefactor Josep Ventosa maintaining the estelada or Catalan independence flag. Agriculture and the maritime exchange in wine had been the traditional sources of earnings throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, whilst agriculture and a great fishing fleet remain resources of profits, the primary economic interest is enterprise in the sectors of metal, fabric and chemicals.
