Thimphu

Thimphu is the most modern city in Bhutan with an abundance of internet cafes, restaurants, shopping centers and nightclubs Thimphu is one of the modern towns in Bhutan that has been equipped with ATM and banking facilities and is a good place to stock up on some currency. However it still has cultural identity and values amidst the signs of modernization. One of the most unique features of Thimphu is that it is the only capital city in the world that does not use traffic lights. Instead major intersections have policemen standing in elaborately decorated booths, directing traffic with exaggerated hand motions. This bustling little city is the main center of government, commerce and religion in the country. The modernity and ancient tradition make Thimphu the ideal location for visitors to immerse themselves in the lifestyle of contemporary Bhutanese and just break away from their tour itinerary. This is the Kingdom’s capital city and home to approximately 100,000 inhabitants including the Royal family.

The way of life of Bhutan is completely reflected in Thimphu in regard of writing, religion, traditions, and national clothing standard, the devout practices of the monsteries, music, dance, literature and in the media. Tshechu is an essential celebration when group dances, prominently known as Cham dances, are performed in the patios of the Tashichho Dzong in Thimphu. It is a four-day celebration held each year amid harvest time September/October, on dates comparing to the Bhutanese timetable.

At first, when Bhutan was opened up for tourism in 1974, the Government-claimed Tourism Corporation was set up in Thimphu to empower and sort out individual and gathering visits to goals of social significance in Bhutan, focusing on Buddhism, weaving, nature, birds and trekking etc. This arrangement was privatized in 1994 and named as Bhutan Tourism Development Corporation. It owns and manages hotels and all the major tourist hubs here. It also manages taxis and local guides to assist the tourists from different locations.

Thimphu does not have a lively night life but rather the quantity of dance club and pool spaces for youngsters is developing quickly.
