About Milagres Church
The Milagres Church is a historic Roman Catholic Church situated in the Hampankatta locality of Mangalore. The church was built in 1680 by Bishop Thomas de Castro, a Theatine from Divar, Goa. This church has an altar with a French painting of St. Monica and St. Augustine. As conversion to Christianity by Portuguese influence waned, Christians began to move further south to Kanara. However, the community lacked priestly leadership, as many of the priests returned to Goa when the Portuguese withdrew.
The Kanara Christians were visited by a Carmelite missionary in 1658. Owing to this, Rev. Fr. Thomas de Castro, a Theatine Priest was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Kanara and Malabar in 1674 by the Holy See. After his death on 16 July 1684, Rev. Fr. Thomas de Castro was buried in the Milagres Cemetery. Following the destruction of the original church by Tipu Sultan, it was re-built in 1811.
Apart from its historical evidences the place has its own tranquility much serene, and composed place. The church is well maintained, amazing architecture and location. The Alter in particular is very impressive.
