About Lachung

Lachung is a town and hill station in northeast Sikkim, India. It is located in the North Sikkim district near the border with Tibet at an elevation of about 9,600 feet 2,900 m and at the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung Rivers. Lachung means 'Small Mountain ' and it gets this name as it is outlined by majestic mountains. The town embraced by snow-capped mountain peaks, breathtaking waterfalls, sparkling streams and apple, peaches and apricots orchards is the perfect holiday destination.

One can also visit the Shingba Rhododendron sanctuary through which flows the Yumthang Chu. The sanctuary is known for its abundance of Rhododendron trees and shrubs. Lachung is also a preferred base to visit the famous Yumthang Valley, quite a landmark in Sikkim's tourism scene. Gompa is also the famous sightseeing spot in this city. The market of this city is filled with handicrafts such as exquisitely woven rugs and blankets that make this town ideal for shopping sprees.

Lachung still retains its distinctive culture and tradition, including the unique system of self-governance called the Zuma where all local disputes are settled by a totally representative body of the village which is headed by an elected Pipon.
