Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery

Being situated inside the historic Jaganmohan Palace, in the very heart of the city Mysore, Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery is an excellent example of Mysore Royal familys abundant love for fine arts. It is known to be one of the best art galleries in Southern India. This exclusive art gallery has a vibrant collection of paintings of Wodeyars of Mysore along with the artifacts collected by the Mysore Royal family from all across the world. In 1875, this three-storied exclusive building of Jaganmohan Palace was converted into an art gallery. The special feature of this art gallery is an incredible collection of Rembrandt paintings. The western collection section of the museum houses works by master like Titan, A. Caddy, P.P. Ruben, and miniature paintings by Gunoy. The gallery also contains the exceptional and precious art collection made by Col. Scott. He was a British Army Officer, who fought on behalf of British Army against Tipu Sultan. Later in 1950 this collection was shifted to Srirangapatna. The gallery also houses a compilation of Gravure prints made by British Army officers what show the details of the great Mysore wars against HyderAli and Tipu Sultan. One hall of the gallery has solely been dedicated to exhibit the wonderful works of the renowned Kerala prince cum painter, Raja Ravi Varma. The subject matter of his paintings was ranging from the very common incidents from the epics to modern art. The paintings are a must witness for the painting lovers. There are excellent collection of artifacts on display of the gallery including traditional gold leaf paintings of the European Schools, Mysore, and Bengal. There are a huge collection of traditional paintings starting from 1875. The other renowned artists whose works can be found on display include the works of Nikolav Roerich of Russia, Sterling of England, Jiladin Ville of Germant, and Colton of Italy. The section exhibiting the works of Indian artists include the works of Raja Rama Varma, the brother of Raja Ravi Verma, Mysore K. Venkatappa, Ishwardas, Subbukrishna, Haldenkar, and M. Verappa. M. Ramanarasaiah was known to be the palace artist. He was appointed as the curator of the gallery for a long time. He created quite a few paintings of the Mysore royal family. Third floors walls of the gallery contain affluent colorful paintings depicting the matters related to the reign of Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. One side of the wall is dedicated to show the grandeur of celebrated Dasara procession of Mysore.
