Ghum Monastery
About Ghum Monastery
Ghoom Monastery is the prominent name of Yiga Choeling. The religious community has a place with the Gelukpa or the Yellow Hat organization and is known for its 15 feet 4.6 m- high statue of the Maitreya Buddha. The outside structure of the building was built up in 1850 by the Mongolian celestial prophet and priest Sokpo Sherab Gyatso, who was leader of the religious community until 1905. In 1909, Kyabje Domo Geshe Rinpoche Ngawang Kalsang, prevalently called Lama Domo Geshe Rinpoche, succeeded Sherab Gyatso as head. It was he who charged the statue of the Maitreya Buddha, and he remained head until 1952. Amid the Chinese control of 1959 in Tibet numerous high positioning abbots fled to India and took shelter in the cloister. In 1961, Dhardho Rinpoche moved toward becoming leader of the Yiga Choeling religious community Ghoom, Darjeeling. He passed on in 1990 and after three years, a kid named Tenzin Legshad Wangdi was perceived as his rebirth.
