About Basilica of Bom Jesus

The Basilica of Bom Jesus church or Borea Jezuchi Basilica is located in Goa. This site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This church holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The church is located in Old Goa. The old goa was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese rules. This church is considered as the best example of baroque architecture.

Being one of the oldest churches in Goa and in India, The floor is of marble inlaid with precious stones. The interior of the church is simple but the gilded altars are elaborately done. This main altar holds a large statue of St. Ignatius of Loyola. St. Ignatius of Loyola was the founder of the Society of Jesus. This church also holds paintings of scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier.

The Basilica of Bom Jesus is more than 400 years old. One can visit this church anytime as the church is always open for public. In a well-decorated casket the body of St. Francis Xavier is placed. The exhibition of the 'body' is held every ten years. The artworks which are done inside this church is called as murals are called "murals".
